Transport system in Rwanda (Central Africa, Eastern Africa) is mainly concentrated in the road network. The paved Roads are between the capital, Kigali, and most of the Rwandan major cities. Rwanda is also linked by road to the other countries of the Great Lakes Region, where most of the Rwandan imports and exports circulate.

Global Transport and Logistics

Rwanda has a total of 12,000 kilometres of roads, of which 1,000 are paved.

  1. National Route 1: Kigali - Byumba - Gatuna (border of Uganda, roads to Kabale and Kampala)
  2. National Route 2: Kigali - Rwamagana - Kayonza
    1. National Route 2a: Kayonza - Nyagatare - Kagitumba (border of Uganda, route towards Mtungamo and Kampala)
    2. National Route 2b: Kayonza - Kibungo - Rusumo (border of Tanzania, route towards Mwanza)
  3. National Route 3: Kigali - Gitarama - Butare -Fugi (border of Burundi, route towards Bujumbura)
    1. National Route 3a: Gitarama - Kibuye (Lake Kivu) crossing the Nile/Congo basin
    2. National Route 3b: Butare - Gikongoro - Cyangugu (Lake Kivu, border of the DR Congo, route towards Bukabu)
  4. National Route 4: Kigali - Ruhengeri - Gisenyi (Lake Kivu, border of the DR Congo, route towards Goma)
    1. National Route 4a: Ruhengeri - Cyanika (border of Uganda, route towards Kisoro)
  5. National Route 5: Kigali - Nyamata - border of Burundi (route towards Kirundo).

Transafrican Transport Corridors:

  1. Northern Transport Corridor (Uganda, Rwanda and Burundi, Port of Mombasa - Kenya)
  2. Central Transport Corridor
    1. Burundi, the DR Congo, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda
    2. Kigali, Goma, Bukavu

Northern Corridor (Burundi, Rwanda, Kenya, and Uganda)

Rwanda has an international airport in Kigali, with domestic and international flights, as well as limited transport between the port cities of the Lake Kivu.

Currently there is no Railway in Rwanda.

Since the 1994 genocide, the government has invested significant amounts in transportation infrastructure.
