Exhibition Concept “Art without an Author. The Richness of African Tribal Art”

With this exhibition, I try to make people understand the richness of art that sometimes seems to be forgotten. An art that, on countless occasions, has not been valued.

The African tribal art is shown as an object, not only religious but also functional. In it, we can see the passage of the years, the different uses, the historical transitions... In addition to making references to the world of artists in the tribal world, relating it to the artists of the first avant-garde.

Jesús Arjona, Art without an Author

Since ancient times people from all over the world have expressed their beliefs and religious concerns, the history of the community, as well as their society, ideas about political power... Through art, also, if this is an element used to decorate their environment and their bodies. Through art, since it is a reflection of social, economic and educational systems, we can study and understand the people who did it, or commissioned it, and their societies.

Among the thousands of artistic expressions that exist, the African tribal art, for being a purely functional art and that does not seek to give importance to the author if not to work, is considered one of the purest arts. An art that does not have authors, that nobody knows faces, but that still has provoked in the past and provokes in the present, fascination to intellectuals like Pablo Picasso, Constantin Brancussi, Malvin Gray Johnson... Provoke a significant influence in his future works that were recognised worldwide, and even today they are icons of artistic periods, but that, on many occasions they forget their origin, the tribal art.

Jesús Arjona, African tribal art

In Africa, a continent where countless peoples with entirely different beliefs and cultures live together, we find a significant volume of works of art of quality, symbolism, meaning and extraordinary richness.

However, is this art recognised by a large part of society?

The answer is no. Many people do not know it, do not value it and even mock it.

The purpose of this exhibition is to understand the richness of this art, to enjoy it, as well as trying to break some barriers that are established between what is European and what is not, since they do not allow us to see the diversity in cultural forms of other places, remaining as established and unique, the western one.
